Meals on Wheels of the greater Lynchburg area is a service designed to assist the frail elderly and younger disabled shut-ins by providing them with one balanced, nutritious, hot meal five days per week. The program is for those persons who cannot cook for themselves, have no one to cook for them and are unable to leave their homes for meals. This service allows people to stay in their homes, maintain some independence, and avoid living in costly institutions—a financial benefit to the client and the community.

A Meals on Wheels delivery also provides a reassuring “check-in” on those who live alone. Any unanswered delivery is reported & investigated. Any changes in a recipient’s health or needs are noted & dietary changes are made as needed. If appropriate, referrals to family, physician, or other community services are made.

More than 950 volunteers deliver over 61,000 meals yearly.

• Service area includes the city of Lynchburg and the contiguous counties.
• Meals are delivered on 18 routes. Staff and volunteers together deliver the three larger inner city routes. Volunteers, using their own vehicles, deliver all the remaining routes.
• Meals cost $3.65 each, but only 25% of approximately 250 recipients are able to pay fully or partially for their meal. The rest are paid for with funds from contributions from the faith community, civic organizations, corporations, individuals, private foundations, and the United Way of Central Virginia.
• Special diets (renal, cardiac, low cholesterol, etc.) are provided by Lynchburg General and Virginia Baptist Hospitals under the supervision of a registered dietician. Canteen Vending Service provides the remainder of the meals. All meals are prepared to provide 1/3; of the U.S. recommended daily allowances for adults

Volunteer to deliver meals, donating 1 1/2 hours a day, a week, a month or a year. Encourage, your place of employment to provide volunteers for a route.

• Support Meals on Wheels services through the Endowment Fund.
• Tell Friends and organizations about Meals on Wheels services and needs.
• Inform those who may need the services of Meal on Wheels.

Groups can help by sponsoring teams of volunteers to deliver meals and by donating towards the cost of providing the service.

Unfortunately, only about 25% of our meal recipients are able to pay for their meals. It is up to us to raise the funds so they do not go hungry. The need is growing, but the funds are shrinking. Your gift will go far to ensure that no one goes to bed hungry.
